This story, written by Graham Greene, is about an American pulp fiction writer (Cotten), who arrives in postwar Vienna only to find that the friend who invited him (Welles) is dead under mysterious circumstances. The ensuing mystery entangles Cotten in his friend's involvement with the black market, with the multinational police, and his Czech girlfriend (Valli). This excellent thriller was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Reed and Best Editing. Robert Krasker won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. THE THIRD MAN is also remembered well for its intoxicating score by zither player Anton Karas. This original silver gelatin photograph was from the archive of theater. It shows signs of general use.
