    Description

This scarce spinner medal (or token) advertised fluorescent lighting from General Electric (GE).  GE patented the first practical fluorescent tubes in 1927, and this item is considered to have been given as a souvenir at the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair to promote the new technology.  As a 'spinner,' this item has a bump on one side on which to spin this item and an arrow on the other side (to determine who buys the next round of drinks?).  The side with the arrow has two portions with blue enamel and, in the center, the GE logo and an image of a fluorescent tube.  The reverse has the words
SEEING SPINNER.  SPIN COIN UNDER GOOD LIGHT, THEN SUDDENLY SHADE COIN TO REDUCE LIGHT. COIN SEEMS TO SPEED UP. UNDER MORE LIGHT IT SEEMS TO SLOW DOWN, PROVING THAT BETTER LIGHT MEANS FASTER, EASIER SEEING. IT TAKES TIME TO SEE.
The diameter is approximately 35 mm (1-3/8"), and the composition appears to be brass with a gilt surface treatment, which remains quite bright, with a good gold color.
The item is in extremely fine condition, with light signs of handling and some toning/soiling, and it is very bright.
The illustrations in this listing are photos of the actual item being offered for sale, serving as part of the description.  NOTE:  The photos were taken through the windows of the item holder, reducing their clarity.  The actual item is lighter in color (with a very good gold color), much brighter, and much more attractive than in the photos.
